Robbinsville Softball – What Is In The Water Over There?

“What is in the water in Robbinsville?”   We often hear that from people wondering why Robbinsville Softball has achieved so much success over the years.

This week, the 12U Robbinsville Little League Softball team won the East Regional title in Bristol, CT earning a berth in the Little League World Series (LLWS) in Oregon.

This marks the 5th time in 9 years and 3rd time in 4 years that Robbinsville Softball has represented the East in the LLWS.  Truly an amazing accomplishment.

World Series Pedigree

How has Robbinsville done in the World Series?

In 2008 a 2nd place finish…
2010 5th place…
2013 3rd place…
Robbinsville Softball
History of World Series Appearances

To appreciate what an accomplishment this is, we need to understand the road they traveled.  Little League starts with local district tournaments in which NJ has 20 districts – Robbinsville is in District 12.  The winners of these District tournaments move on to sectionals where they play other NJ District winners.

Winners of the 4 NJ Sectional tournaments move on to play for the state title.  Winner of the state title goes on to Regionals where they face the other 10 state teams in the East in Bristol, CT.  In the Regionals, Robbinsville outscored their opponents by an amazing 34-7 margin.

Robbinsville Softball – A Winning Formula

The journey started June 23rd and the girls have played 15 games thus far.  However, the amount of practice hours the girls have put in is another story.

While the water in Robbinsville is top notch, that is not what is producing these results.  Drive by Tantum Park field in June and July and you will undoubtedly see the girls from “R-Ville” practicing long and hard.

This doesn’t even cover the “extra” time the girls put in with outside training at local facilities.
Reminders of past success in LF of T3
Reminders of past success in LF of T3

So, hard work and focus is certainly the formula for success for Robbinsville Softball.  Scott Veisz, a coach on the 2014 World Series team and VP of Softball for Robbinsville Little League, expands on that formula.

“We are so proud of our girls.  Their success is the result of a community, league, parents, coaches and players commitment to embracing the joy of softball in Robbinsville.  The efforts so many people put into this program to help the girls reach their potential is really amazing.”  – Scott Veisz
Success can be contagious.  Seeing those plaques on the outfield fence and the banners on the walls of the cage builds a sense of pride for the girls participating in the Robbinsville Softball program.  The coaches learn from prior coaches, older players encourage the younger ones and the league improves year after year.
2014 Champs

A Strong Foundation

Finally, the teams all have amazing support systems surrounding them.

Parents & Siblings… who get the players to the practices and delay much of their summer vacations for these tournaments.
Coaches… who provide constant feedback while giving much of their free time to get the teams ready
Volunteers… who organize the schedules, work the fields, and give their time to better the league
League… who provide the equipment, the fields, and organization for the tournament entries
Sponsors… who help defray the cost of the tournaments and uniforms
Other Teams… who decorate players’ houses prior to tournaments and attend their games
Community… who attend the pep rallys and welcome homes, watch games on the internet and support the players on social media (Facebook, Snapchat, etc)

How You Can Support

Game #1 of the World Series is August 11th against the Netherlands at 10pm ET.  Some of the later round games will be on ESPN2.

As you can imagine, traveling to Oregon after a week in Connecticut can become expensive.   The team has set up a GoFundMe page to help defray some of the costs the families have to spend.  If you can spare a small donation for these inspiring girls, I’m sure they would appreciate it.

There are several other opportunities to meet the girls and help support them with this schedule.

Please be sure to share this article with your friends and family to rally support for these amazing girls.

FridayFive

Here are this week’s best…

1. 6-Month Old Girl Is World’s Youngest Water Skier

You just have to see this one.  A 6-month old little girl has become the world’s youngest water skier.  Not sure I would let my 6-month old try this but the video is a sight to see.

2. What To Do After You Graduate College

Some advice I wish I had when I graduated from college.  Gay Vaynerchuk is a unique individual and an amazing entrepreneur.  His story is an excellent read and his company is changing the social media world.  You also become infected by his personality and can truly motivate young people to take a chance on themselves.

3. Cell Phone Cancer Link New Study

An issue I’ve always been worried about since cell phones were introduced.  It certainly puts to rest the thought that mobile phones pose no cancer risk.  We’ve always kept our kids away from using them to their ears opting for speakerphone use only.  It will be interesting to see if the government regulations change with this study.

4. Doing Some Good – Check Out Kiva

Micro-loans are something making a huge difference in other parts of the world.  Kiva is the leading micro-loan site.  They work by taking donations from users and providing to mostly third world countries were business owners are looking for funds.  We’ve been a user for some time and the experience has been a good one.

The loans are paid back over time and you can re-lend that money to other businesses.  Check it out if you’d like to make a difference in someone’s life.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Amazon Fire TV Stick

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is The Amazon Fire TV Stick.

If you’d like to cut your cable TV cord, this is a product you may find interesting.  For only $39.99, you can turn any TV with an HDMI port into a streaming TV.  You get access to Netflix, Amazon TV, Hulu, HBO Now, Showtime and many others.

The best part is you can take it with you when traveling (hotels, dorms, etc).  It is a bit bigger than a pack of gum so it travels well.  You cannot beat the ease of use and there are games on it if you get really bored.  Check out the reviews.

Here are this week’s best…

1. 12 Life Lessons From Someone Who Has Seen Over 12,000 Deaths

An interesting article on a man who runs a guesthouse where people come to spend their last days.  Some great life advice based on the folks he has come in contact with over the years.  Our favorite: Filter out people’s bad traits instead of just dismissing those people from your life.

2. The Not-To-Do List: 9 Habits To Stop Now

One of my favorite articles that changed my life (literally).  At work I used to waste so many cycles on silly meetings, calls or conversations.  Tips like checking email in batch mode vs. all the time save so much time and keep you on task.

3. Major Misconceptions About Sleep

Sleep is something many take for granted but for some it is a constant battle.  There a major misconceptions about sleep such as you have the ability to ‘catch up’ after a bad night of sleep.  This video highlights some things you may not know about that precious sleep.

4. The Only Two Rules You Need To Follow In All Areas Of Life

Big fan of waterfalls here and I love this article.  Best part about it – no passport is required to see any of these waterfalls.  Unfortunately, only a few on the east coast but the North Carolina one looks fun.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Cold Sores Be Gone

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is Cold Sores Be Gone.

If you get cold sores, this is an amazing product.  Gets rid of them and keeps your lips moist the whole time.   The stick makes it easy to use and carry.

1. How To Find 2 Million Dollars In The Morning

A very unique guy with a very unique outlook on life.  I haven’t posted much from him but I thought this one was interesting.  Let me know what you think.

2. 3 Ways To Get Your Tween Up In The Morning

If you are like me, getting your tween (or teen) up in the morning can be a challenge.  Multiple trips up the stairs getting louder each time.  We have employed the last tip to great success.  Nothing beats an event like missing the bus.

3. Parents Of Successful Kids Have These Things In Common

A great read of summaries of studies that investigate what parents of successful children have in common.  One my faves was how setting the bar high is important.  A close second was valuing effort over avoiding failure.

4. 13 Waterfalls You Need To See In Your Lifetime

Big fan of waterfalls here and I love this article.  Best part about it – no passport is required to see any of these waterfalls.  Unfortunately, only a few on the east coast but the North Carolina one looks fun.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil.

OK this one can change your life.  This product is added to your morning coffee and will certainly change your morning routine.

This product is a substitute for sugar that allows your brain to kickstart quickly and efficiently with no crash.  There is more on how to make your Bulletproof Coffee right here.  The nice part about this is it comes out like a frothy latte.  The results are impressive especially when it comes to being able to concentrate early in the morning.

Here are this week’s best…

1. A Habit That Kobe Bryant, The Beatles And A Child Chess Prodigy Has In Common

We always wonder about the habits of highly successful and motivated people.  Well there is one habit that is becoming more popular among those who seem to achieve a high level of success.  Personally, I’ve tried it and trying to get better at it.

2. The 2 Most Impactful Words I Say To My Kids

Children go through so many emotions (and hormones) during the stages of their lives.  It can be difficult to know what to say when they are experiencing frustration.  This article will help with some tips to navigate their feelings.

3. A Sports Mom’s Inner Dialogue

A great read and laugh from a mom that has been to too many youth sports games this year.  Sometimes we are all guilty of praying for rain. ; )

4. FDA Finally Issues Regulations On E-Cigs

Talking to my kids I am shocked at how many kids they know vape or smoke e-cigs.  The FDA has finally issued rules around the popular new product.  Will this help?

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Fosmon HD1831 3-Port HDMI Switch

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is the Fosmon 3-Port HDMI Switch.

Well, Mom got a new DVD player for Christmas and it connects to the TV via HDMI.  HDMI allows for a better signal and many TVs/accessories utilize these.  However, many TVs still only have one HDMI port which is usually taken up by the cable box.

This product allows you to turn your one HDMI port into 3.  The best part is it automatically switches over to the DVD player when powered on.  Easy to set up and no extra long cords to deal with behind the TV.  We also purchased the High Speed HDMI cables from Amazon and have been very happy with the results.

Here are this week’s best…

1. Living In The Area – What Kind of Income Do You Need?

Guess what?  It is cheap to live in Tuscon, Arizona.  Not sure that helps us here in Robbinsville.  Check out what it costs to live in different cities in the US.  Surprise…New York is expensive.

2. 6 Secrets You Should NOT Keep From Your Doctor

Women should read this one especially if you’ve had children.  Sometimes living with a problem is not necessary as many of these are treatable fairly easily.

3. Dr. Mayer GoFundMe Page

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe page to help with higher education costs for Steve’s children.  Check it out and give if you can.

4. Can’t Miss Mother’s Day Gift (as told by a mom)

Every year the guys struggle to find that gift for their wives (or moms).  This year, we can provide an inside track on what most (maybe all) moms want for the big day.  Hint: The gift is a pretty easy one guys.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Bissel Vacuum with OnePass

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is the Bissel Vacuum with OnePass.

OK, our vacuum finally conked out.  We kept it alive for as long as we could but finally it started making horrible noises and didn’t pick up a thing.  For $79, the Bissel OnePass is awesome.  Several attachments for stairs, furniture, etc.  It is a solid vacuum that is not too heavy to move around.

Great reviews that we can confirm as we love it.

This week’s Friday Five comes with a heavy heart.  As many of you know, Dr. Steve Mayer was jogging near his home and tragically struck and killed by a vehicle.   We thought it appropriate to pass along all the great stories we’ve learned about Steve in recent days.  We hope this allows you a glimpse into all he did and what a great man he was.

FridayFive

1. Dr. Mayer’s Career in Education

Steve had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and administrator.  He was also the founding principal at Grover Middle School in West Windsor.  He became the assistant superintendent for WW and, after three years, Robbinsville hired him to be their superintendent.   Click here to learn more about Dr. Mayer’s time in education.

2. Steve’s Commitment to Charity

Many who knew Steve knew that he wanted to make the world a better place.  These were not just words with him. Steve was on the board of directors for Deerfoot, a Christian wilderness camp for boys.  The main link above is to a video of Steve talking about Deerfoot.

He was also involved with Hope Unlimited for Children, which helps at-risk children in Brazil.  These were two of Steve’s favorite charities.  If you’d like to honor him with a donation, links are below.

3. Outpouring of Love For Dr. Mayer

When this tragedy struck, the Robbinsville community was shocked and at a loss for what to do.  A candlelight vigil was organized for Dr. Mayer on Tuesday night.  The park at Foxmoor was packed with people honoring Steve and his life of making a difference in our community.  Truly a touching tribute to a great man who touched so many lives.

4. Memorial Service Information

Today, there will be a memorial service held for Dr. Mayer at Princeton Alliance Church.  A video stream will be provided at Robbinsville High School, Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Princeton and St. David the King in Princeton Junction. The church’s website will also stream the service.

5. Remembering The Man

Few can forget the smile that Steve had.  It was so sincere and always infectious.  We encourage everyone to go out to social media and see the stories of those that were impacted by Steve.  There are links to photos, Facebook posts and other stories below.  He was taken from us way too soon but he will not be forgotten.

We’ve all heard that it takes 10,000 hours to truly master something.  Who has that kind of time?  This article dives into other ways and tips to master something.  Hint: Do NOT be afraid to fail.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – Alexa From Amazon

Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is the Amazon Echo also known as Alexa.

A Christmas gift from grandma, our family loves Alexa.  It connects to your wifi network and provides Siri-like information, music and fun for the whole family.  Each morning we ask things like, “Alexa, what is the weather today?  Alexa, what is the latest news?  Alexa, who won the Ranger game last night?  Alexa, play some Billy Joel for me.”…and instantly we have what we need.

A fun and useful tool for the house with loads of extra you can download for free.  Connects to your Amazon Prime, Pandora, Spoitfy, iHeart Radio for music.  In addition, you can connect your wireless lighting, heating and other switches to her.  We love her.

5. Product Rec Of The Week – 4 Pack of iPhone Charging Cables

A new feature we’re adding to the Friday Five is a product we’ve found to be excellent.  Each week, we’ll recommend a product you may find useful.  This week it is the 4 Pack of Beam Charging Cables For iPhone.

With 4 phones in the house (teen/preteen), we needed new cables and paying full price at the Apple Store seemed a bit much.  Instead of paying $20+ each, we found this 4 Pack of iPhone 5/5s/6/6s Charging Cable Pack for under $20.

The reviews are awesome and so far no issues from our end – kids are thrilled and no more fighting over cables.  Highly recommended!
